Custom AIARE avalanche courses with the OAC
Set up a custom, private AIARE avalanche course exclusively for you, your partners, and/or your friends. Learn in a small group of people you know. We offer private AIARE 1, AIARE 2, Avalanche Rescue, and custom avalanche training.
Benefits of a private, custom AIARE avalanche class with the OAC: Small group size, significant contact time with the instructor before, during and after your class, and being able to pick your classmates all leads to a better class experience, better comprehension and retention of the material
Instructor: All of our AIARE 1 and AIARE 2 classes are led by Richard Bothwell, who is a highly regarded avalanche educator, with 15 years of experience teaching the AIARE curriculum, and a former Executive Director at AIARE. Richard is also the author of Light Tours of Tahoe, a guidebook of ski tours that largely avoid avalanche terrain.
Format: Choose from our standard format for AIARE 1 or AIARE 2 -two Zoom calls preceding 2 consecutive days in the field, or choose three consecutive days, or spread the days out over multiple weeks. We try to work with your availability and preferences.
AIARE Avalanche Rescue is a one day class, focusing exclusively on the rescue aspect of avalanche training.
An AIARE refresh or “practicum”. is a great option for people who have taken an AIARE class and want to use their skills in the field, under the watchful eye of an AIARE instructor.

Class size: We like to target a maximum class size of 6 students, but private classes can have from 1 to 12 students. In some cases, larger classes can be arranged as well.
Locations: Donner Summit or Lassen National Park. Our field locations are in the Tahoe National Forest in the Truckee area, near Donner Summit and Lassen National Park. In Lassen, we focus on terrain easily accessible from the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Accommodations are available in our house in Mineral, just outside of the park. You’ll be staying with your instructor, providing time to have your questions answered after normal class hours.
Pricing: There are many factors that determine the price of a custom, private avalanche class. As a guide, a weekend AIARE 1 class for up to 6 people, paid on one invoice, is $3,900.
