Your Instructor: Richard Bothwell
Richard brings 15 years of AIARE teaching experience and served as Executive Director of AIARE. He’s also the author of Light Tours of Tahoe, a guidebook focused on ski tours that avoid avalanche terrain.

Course Options:
- AIARE Level 1 – Master avalanche terrain assessment and safe travel decisions
- AIARE Level 2 – Advanced skills for managing complex terrain
- Avalanche Rescue – One-day intensive focused exclusively on rescue techniques
- AIARE Refresh/Practicum – Practice your skills in the field with instructor feedback
Format & Scheduling (Choose the format that fits your group):
- Standard: Two Zoom sessions + 2 consecutive field days
- Intensive: 3 consecutive days
- Extended: Spread field days across multiple weekends
Locations:
- Donner Summit/Truckee Area – Tahoe National Forest terrain near Donner Summit
- Lassen National Park – Accessible terrain from Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center
- Stay with your instructor: At Lassen, accommodations are available in our house in Mineral—giving you extra time to ask questions after class hours.
Pricing:
Starting at $3,900 for a weekend AIARE 1 course (up to 6 people, single invoice). Final pricing depends on course type, group size, format, and location.
