Backpacking and Camping Rental Gear for OAC Trips
Backpacking and Camping Rental Gear for OAC Trips
Signing up for an OAC backpacking or camping trip and don’t have you own gear? No problem. We’ve got you covered. We have backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and hiking poles.
- We have a variety of rental gear available for your OAC trip. All our gear is what we’d describe as standard quality gear available at good outdoor stores. We don’t have cheap gear in our rental program, and we also don’t have the lightest possible gear in the program. This list describes the gear we have, generally. Due to availability and logistical constraints, we can’t always provide specific gear, but we will provide appropriate gear (if you reserve a tent, you’ll have a great backpacking tent, but we can’t guarantee you’ll have a Tungsten, for instance).
- You don’t have to be a member of the Outdoor Adventure Club to rent gear from us, but OAC Members get free backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pads and poles for OAC trips.
- For OAC trips, your guides will bring the items to the trip location for your use. So no need to pick up in advance or return after your trip.
- Advance reservation is required for any gear rentals, and based on availability.

Our standard Our standard rental backpack is the Osprey Kiva and Escalante.
Kiva’s are 70 liters, fit a 14-19” torso, and weigh 4 ¾ pounds.
Escalantes are 75 liters and weigh just over 5 pounds.
The Escalante comes in two sizes;
S/M fits a 15-20” torso, – tends to work well for people under 5’8”
L/XL fits a 19-24” torso.- what most people use on our trips.
We pick these packs for our program because they have an easily adjustable suspension, allowing us to fine tune the fit for just about any guest in seconds, at the trailhead.
The torso size can be adjusted 5”, in seconds.
The waist belt padding can be adjusted 6”, as well.
We have a variety of tents in the rental program. We can’t guarantee in advance which tent will be provided, as they may be on other trips, or they be out of service being cleaned or repaired.
Some examples of tents we have:
-Mountain Hardwear Nimbus 2 UL- rated as 2 person, but it’s a very tight fit. Comfortable for 1. Trail weight: 2 pounds, 4 ounces.
-Marmot Tungsten 1- 1 person about 3 pounds, 9 ounces
-Lithic 1 – 1 person – about 3 pounds, 8 ounces
-Mountain Hardwear Shifter 2- comfy 2 person tent, about 5 pounds
Our sleeping bags are mummy shaped, use synthetic insulation, and are rated at 20º. We think they are comfortable down to about 30º, though. Stuffed size is about 7” by 12”.
Sizes are:
-Regular: Up to 6’, 3 pounds 3 ounces,
-Long: Up to 6’6”, 3 pounds 8 ounces
We have two options for sleeping pads- Therma Rest Trail lite “self-inflating” pads, and Therma Rest Z Lite folding foam pads.
Trail lite self inflating pads:
-These pads are 1.5” thick, and have an R value of 3.2
-They come in lengths of 5’6”, 6’ and 6’6”,
-Weigh between 1 pound 10 ounces and 2 pounds 3 ounces, depending on size
-Packed size is roughly 12” by 8”
-They require a few breaths to fill them with air, in spite of being called “self inflating”
Z Rest folding pads:
-These pads are ¾” thick, and 6’ long, weigh 14 ounces, and have an R value of 2
-They fold down to a size of 20”x5”x5”, and are attached to the outside of the backpack for transport
-They don’t need to be inflated, and can be used on dirt and rocks without worry of puncture.
